Opis:
The pioneer of the "mountain film", a movie that takes place in an Alpine setting, Arnold Fanck's THE HOLY MOUNTAIN stars Leni Riefenstahl as Diotina, a dancer who travels to a small mountain village to find the man of her dreams. She finds a climber and a skier who are there to pursue their own idyllic dreams while navigating the danger and beauty of the mountains. Wonderful and bizarre, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN elevates its drama to a near mythic status. She was Hitler's favourite director. She was beautiful and talented. She was a woman in a man's field. Three strikes and you're out. Leni Riefenstahl, who remained active into her late 90s, was never able to shed the historical contamination that attached to her during the last half of her 101 years. Despite (some say because of) her demonstrated talent as actor, dancer, director, cinematographer, and still photographer, Riefenstahl could not shake off her Third Reich associations. Although her films have had enormous impact on world cinema, the woman herself found it difficult to gain public respect. Her attempt to revive her directorial career in the 1950s proved futile. The often-imitated, seldom-honored artist remained a controversial and unrepentant pariah up until her death on 8 September 2003. Ironically, her own well-crafted black-and-white motion-picture images of Hitler, Nazi pageantry, and the Jesse Owens Olympics helped keep both her genius and her past alive. In the words of Ray Muller, director of the documentary The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl, 'Her talent was her tragedy.
An amazing documentary about an incredible woman, this film traces the controversial life of Leni Riefenstahl, from her beginnings as beloved starlet of German mountain movies through her career as director of some of the most infamous films of the 20th century. Though her diverse filmography includes narrative works like THE BLUE LIGHT and the stunningly beautiful documentary OLYMPIA (a celebration of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin), Riefenstahl will forever be associated with her Nazi epic TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. While she herself never actually joined the Nazi Party, the creation of this single most effective propaganda film ever made cemented her controversial status and forced her to spend the rest of her life trying to live down her association with the Third Reich. To this day the 91-year-old subject, largely regarded as the greatest woman filmmaker of all time, remains fiercely private about her controversial relationship with Hitler and the Nazis. Ray Muller's riveting documentary captures Riefenstahl in all her disturbingly unapologetic charisma as she addresses her turbulent past for the first time on camera.
German filmmaker and doctor Arnold Fanck (1[zasłonięte]889-19) made this beautifully photographed Bergfilm, or 'mountain film', in 1926. Written in three days and nights - especially for Riefenstahl - The Holy Mountain took over a year to film in the Alps with an entourage of expert skiers and climbers.
Ostensibly a love triangle romance - between Riefenstahl's young dancer and the two explorers she encounters - Fanck relishes the glorious Alpine landscape by filming death-defying climbing, avalanche-dodging, and frenetic downhiill ski racing.
This restoration is a visual feast - a fascinating look at the origins of a genre. After learning the ropes from Fanck, Riefenstahl's own Bergfilme flowered at UFA during the 1930s, and Fanck became her editor.
