The X in the name is from the cross beneath the seat. Other director’s chairs have two of them but here you can shove your feet comfortably underneath. The idea came from compact living, the insight that people in the future were going to want fewer but more flexible furniture. A director’s lounge-chair and folding-table came with the family too. And when the collection was shown for the first time it was arranged in two adjacent rooms, one fully furnished and the other empty apart from the folded furniture leaning against the walls. The combination of design and engineering was so unusual that the chair was quickly recognized as trailblazing. Export went to the USA. To Italy. And to the Stockholm TV studios, where Ingmar Bergman was interviewed in one.
