Co-created by Bruce Lee, ABC's Kung Fu features Hollywood scion David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a man of mixed Chinese and American parentage raised by the Buddhist monks of the Shaolin Temple. Caine -- whose formidable skill for hand-to-hand combat is perfectly tempered by his belief in nonviolence -- kills a member of the Chinese royal family and is forced to take it on the lam in America's western frontier. Pursued by Chinese agents and bounty hunters, the peaceful, priestly stranger with a roundhouse that just won't quit wanders about, searching for his half brother, dealing reluctantly with random injustice, and flashing back to his Temple days. These latter segments put a friendly face on Eastern philosophy for many who grew up in the U.S. in the 1970s, Americanizing the martial arts for the masses and introducing one-with-nature notions to an audience that was otherwise tuning in to watch Caine kick booty. The first season runs to 14 episodes, all included in this three-DVD set, along with a pair of documentaries on the show. Among the familiar faces who pop up in the first year of Kung Fu -- in addition to Carradine's father, John, and brother, Robert -- are John Saxon, Robert Urich, Dean Jagger, Pat Hingle, Merlin Olsen, Andrew Duggan, James Hong, Mako, Richard Hatch, Soon-Teck Oh, Jodie Foster, Geoffrey Lewis, Sheree North, Will Geer, Chief Dan George, Denver Pyle, and Gary Busey.
