Kenneth Bushnell is a practicing artist, actively exhibiting locally, nationally and internationally. His principal works are paintings in oil and water media. He has also produced a large body of drawings, prints, sculpture, environmental installations, costumes and theater sets for dance, short films and furniture designs.

Bushnell’s focus has been on issues centering on abstract art. His work takes the form of shaped canvases, as well as conventional formats for painting, prints, sculpture and installations. In the past two decades, all of his abstract work has been cataloged under the umbrella title “EDC’, an acronym for the EUCLIDIAN DREAM CYCLE. This over- arching term places in opposition the Greek mathematician Euclid, who stands for Western rational thought and the word “dream” which refers to the irrational reordering of space and time, as well as intuitive choice. All works labeled “EDC: ____” begin with geometric line plots, originating from equilateral triangles and arcs drawn from either the leg or the altitude of the triangles. A chain of intuitive choices having to do with the specific chromatic, tonal and tactile organization make up one of many possible responses to the proposed line plot. Abstract signs, symbols and metaphors are encoded within the process.

Bushnell has produced in parallel with the abstract work a continuing sequence of figurative paintings, drawings and prints. The subject of these works is, more often than not, botanical.

Kenneth Bushnell was born in Los Angeles, California in 1933. He completed a BA degree in Art at UCLA in 1956 and later a MFA degree in Art at the University of Hawaii. He is now Professor of Art Emeritus at the University of Hawaii after a thirty-nine year teaching career, interrupted by two years as a visiting exchange professor at C.W. Post Center, Long Island University and a one term visiting position at Thames Valley University, London, England. He presently divides his time between studios in New York City, the south of France and Honolulu.
