This is the first recording to be made on the restored grand Schyven organ of the Salle Philharmonique in Liège, and the first discographic encounter of a new musical director with his orchestra. Cypres and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège don festive garb to present two symphonies with organ. A deployment of orchestral forces in osmosis with the genie of the place through two works that have close ties to Liège, served here by an outstanding musician! Though Jongen (Cypres is now releasing the sixth disc devoted to the (re)discovery of his music) was native to Liège (like César Franck), it was with Saint-Saëns’s Third Symphony, that the newly built Schyven organ was inaugurated in 1890, three years after the work’s premiere in London. This is an ideal programme for enjoying the different sounds of a work with organ – an instrument that is an orchestra in itself! The organ dominates in the Symphonie concertante of Jongen, who, in the concluding ‘Toccata’ provides a demonstration of both power and expressive strength, while Saint-Saëns in his famous (and last) Third Symphony, makes use of its now intimate, now jubilant voice, admirably blending the colours of the instrument with those of the orchestra.
