This book tells the story of how I learned to listen to horses and to communicate with them across the divide which our separate species naturally defines for us.
It only occurred to me to write down my discoveries after a particular turn of events one December evening in 1988, when I was 53 years old.

He went on to describe how Her Majesty the Queen of England wanted to investigate my work with horses and perhaps see for herself what I claimed to be able to do in terms of communicating with them.
Now, John Bowles is a man not above playing a practical joke or two, so naturally this is what I thought I was dealing with. I asked him how come he, plain John Bowles, was carrying messages for Her Majesty?
He answered that an English friend of his, a certain Sir John Miller, was a former Equerry to the Queen - thafs to say, her horse manager - and she5d instructed him to find me. Her Majesty had read articles printed in The Blood Horse and Florida Horse magazines, which explained the demonstrations Fd been doing, she had been intrigued.
John Bowles said it was the easiest task he5d ever had, to find someone who lived 5 miles away and whom he!d known for 15 years.
Not long afterwards, Sir John Miller came to meet me at my farm in California, to see what I could do.
