Whether you like him or loathe him, it can't be denied that Jamie Oliver's efforts to bring cooking to the live stage--captured on his
Happy Days Tour Live!--were certainly original. That love/hate attitude will find itself sorely tested throughout the video's two-hour duration, with Oliver projecting his cheeky cockney persona to the nth degree (in Jamie's world, all women are "darling", all men "mate").
The show itself verges on pure panto, from the chef's spectacular entrance to his breathless delivery, musical interludes, state-of-the-art set and constant audience participation. As he explains in a brief interview sequence however, this is an unpredictable concept and the result is certainly more than just one man, his pots and his pans. The actual cooking sequences are what we've come to expect from the Naked Chef--frantic, deceptively simple and attractive enough to inspire even the most culinary challenged to give them a go. --Phil Udell
On the DVD: Happy Days Tour Live! comes to DVD complete with on-screen recipe cards, from where you can jump directly to Jamie (and his band of volunteers) actually making the recipe, turning this disc into an interactive cookbook. There are plenty of recipes to try, and delving back into the DVD at a later date to see Jamie cook that chocolate cheesecake is simple. The short interview gives an insight into why, where and what he's trying to achieve with the show. Fans of Jamie will enjoy the wedding video: although it's only 15 minutes long you do get to see him looking nervous as he's waiting for Jools to walk down the aisle--pukka! --Nicky Read
