In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, the great monasteries of Russia were literally thrown to the four winds. The monks, with their centuries-old heritage of spirituality and mysticism, either had to conform to the dictates of atheistic Communism or leave the country. Many chose exile. Among them was Sergius Bolshakoff who, in 1919, began traveling from monastery to monastery throughout Europe, where he spent time garnering the truth and wisdom of many contemporary spiritual fathers of Eastern Christian monasticism. Father M. Basil Pennington encouraged Dr. Bolshakoff to publish these conversations and has added a number of more recent accounts based on his own experiences with some successors to these holy men. The result, originally published in 1979, is a distillation of ancient truth and enlightenment preserved by the Russian startzy of this century for today and for future generations everywhere. Alba House is proud to make this work available once again to a post cold war generation of readers.
About the Authors: Sergius Bolshakoff maintained extensive contact with the Russian Christian world from the time he fled his native country in 1919 until his death in 1991. Having obtained his doctorate in philosophy at Christ Church, Oxford in 1946, he devoted his life to ecumenism, visiting monasteries on every continent in its behalf. M. Basil Pennington, OCSO, the founder of the International Cistercian studies symposium and a member of the Ecumenical Institute of Spirituality, is a well-known author, monk and priest at St. Joseph Abbey, in Spencer, Massachusetts.
