IMPALED NAZARENE- Road To The Octagon to ostatnia jak do tąd płyta zespołu z roku 2010 Phwoar, this is something else. Whenever you get told or reminded about a band that seems interesting, you seem to put it off until you actually 'feel' like you have enough time or you actually remember to check them up. I'm glad I did this time round, because here is something to blow your brain out. Impaled Nazarene are a band who really don't know what they want to do and I don't know about you, but thats what makes them really really good. Every album is different in some respect, especially the 'cyber metal' phase and this time round its gone very old school. No, not just old school black metal or black metal as play it, but old school extreme music in general. Here we have this blend of Slayer-proto death riffs with some very melodic thrash, 80's hardcore (possibly grindcore from the speed of those blast beats) ferocity and general melody and that certain black metal feel of 'unrelenting evil'. Unrelenting being the only term I can think of for a tide of riffs that just bursts into your ears. 80's solo's flying right into your ears, a sort of ballady track in the middle and all the songs under 3 minutes long (save 2) and you really have no idea what this band are going to pull next. // 7 Lyrics and Singing: Compared to previous albums, Mika (yes, thats his name) has finally settled on a solid vocal style. I say solid because well, its what I would call a mandatory scream. Sort of if the guy from Bolt Thrower is how every death metal vocalist should sound, then Mika is what to expect from every modernised black metal band. On its own, nothing that special, but this band probably wouldn't get anywhere without it. Sounding like a wailing bomb unleashing its power into the music, biting rasps and screams really drive this music along and it needs to at the speed this band plays. // 6 Impression: On first listen, I thought it was some sort of Slayer worship (a lot of it is really..) but its got its own edge, more like an updated version of Slayer. Seeing as Slayer now don't really have enough erm.. energy to put out another 'Reign in Blood' then maybe this could be what 'World Painted Blood' should be if it had actual melody to it. Actually not its not, it is after all a totally different band who don't know what they want to be, so instead of sounding new and amazing it sounds like we've heard it all before whether its the speed driven black metal or mid 80's thrash worship on this album. Definitly a black metal album, but fairly average as far as it goes. That said though, it is pretty terrifying on first listen.
