Historia za PM@M:

HUTSCHENREUTHER

Hutschenreuther is the name of the family that established the production of porcelain in Northern Bavaria, in 1814. Hutschenreuther was a trend-setter and enabled Germany to gain an excellent reputation in the European porcelain industry. The Hutschenreuther "Mark of the Lion" is a symbol of excellence that continues to this day, though, since 2000, it is a trademark of Rosenthal.

History

The company was founded in 1814 by Carl Magnus Hutschenreuther (c1[zasłonięte]780-18) and based in Hohenberg an der Eger, Bavaria, Germany. Carl had previously worked at the Wallendorf porcelain manufacturing company. After his death in 1845, the factory was headed by his widow, Johanna Hutschenreuther, and her sons. From 1860, they produced gilded porcelains that were hand painted. A large part of the factory was destroyed by a fire in 1848 but it was rebuilt.

 C. M. Hutschenreuther, Hohenberg/Eger

In the early part of the 20th century, Hutschenreuther grew quickly by absorbing factories at Altrohlau (1909), of Carl Auvera in Arzberg (1918/1919)

Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Selb

Around 1856, Carl's sons Lorenz and Christian founded their own firm in Selb, a town some 17 km north of Hohenberg. Later know as Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Selb (LHS), this firm expanded and took over the Tirschenreuth porcelain factory, in 1927.

Hutschenreuther AG to Rosenthal Trademark

Since 2000 Hutschenreuther survives only as a Rosenthal trademark. The brand continues to produce porcelain and bone china ranges, including its classic ranges, the most famous of which is Blau Zwiebelmuster, a range based on the [Meissen porcelain] service of the same name. Hutschenreuther was the only officially licensed manufacturer to be allowed to mass-produce this very traditional range by Meissen in the 1930s, even though copies based on the same pattern were allowed by the German courts of law since 1926.

Rosenthal AG, Hutschenreuther's owners, are a division of Italian firm Sambonet Paderno since 2009, after having been let go from Waterford Wedgwood, which fell apart in 2008 due to financial difficulty and was reborn as WWRD (Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton). For Hutschenreuther's porcelain collections, all of this has had little effect. However, a few ranges were sold under the Wedgwood brand in the USA, even though they were identical to Hutschenreuther ranges and produced on the same production line. The backstamp and packaging were the only difference. These ranges included Alfabia and Medley, both patterns on the Maria Theresia shape.

Paul Muller’s factory was founded in 1890 and specialized in the manufacturing of porcelain tableware. The back stamp with the crown in the picture was acquired by Hutschenreuther in 1917. Between 1943 and 1957 Hutschenreuther rented this factory to “Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin” which was destroyed during the war. The history of the Hutschenreuther Company begins with the name of Carl Magnus Hutschenreuther who opened the first Bavarian decorating after some years he started to produce porcelain himself porcelain factory in the upper Frankonian region of Germany, in 1814.

Nowadays, Hutschenreuther is where high standard meet international flair. Being a member of the Group Rosenthal Wedgwood Waterford it produces fine porcelain tableware for dinner, coffee and tea, gift articles and hotel porcelain. As a yardstick and premium brand name for the international art de la table, Hutschenreuther offers both stylish and fine porcelain with exclusive character, functional image and innovative product range. Gorgeous cup and saucer are entirely hand painted with pink roses and green foliage on a softly blended pastel ground. The rims have a wide band of rich, old Roman gold and the art is exceptionally well done. The porcelain is very fine and translucent.

In addition to decorating white ware, Hutschenreuther wanted to produce his own patterns, and after an eight year struggle with the Bavarian Government (which was not interested in creating competition for the state-owned factory), Hutschenreuther received the necessary permission to begin production in 1822. Upon his death in 1845, his son Lorenz founded his own Hutschenreuther Porcelain Company in Selb. Son Christian and widow Johanna also worked to carry on the company tradition.

In the early part of the 20th century, Hutschenreuther grew quickly by absorbing factories at Altrohlau (1909), Arzburg (1918) and Tirschenreuth (1927). The branches of the company were united in 1969. Hutschenreuther was a trend-setter and enabled Germany to gain an excellent reputation in the European china industry. The Hutschenreuther “Mark of the Lion” is a symbol of excellence that continues to this day.

Germany / Bavaria / Arzberg:

Comment:

The history of some factories can be quite confusing, expecially when the normal timelines are often obstructed by takeovers and mergers. One of the most confusing parts in German porcelain industry is the development of the factories in Arzberg and Schönwald which was mainly influenced by the factories in Kahla, Hohenberg and Selb. One part of this history requires that one is comfortable with the existence of the two 'Hutschenreuther' factories: the 'Carl Magnus Hutschenreuther' factory from Hohenberg and the 'Lorenz Hutschenreuther' factory from Selb, both of which merged in 1969 to form the 'Hutschenreuther A.G.' that is also mentioned here. In addition, the special status of the 'Kahla A.G.' should be taken into account - after Germany split in 1949, the town of Kahla and the largest portion of the Kahla company was located in East Germany; a part of the stock corporation however was located in West Germany and should be treated as 'independent' factory as it was simply cut off from it's mother company and was later assimilated by the 'Hutschenreuther A.G.' group. So hold in mind that this Arzberg entry you are just about to read is not to be confused with the 'Arzberg' brand and factory that Hutschenreuther acquired from Kahla in 1972!

[1] : Porzellanfabrik L.C. Äcker (1839 until 1884)

When looking at the dates given for the founding of the factory owned by Lorenz Christof Äcker one will find that most sources either show 1838 or 1839. The 'correct' dating is simply a point of view and depends on what somebody would accept as founding date because construction of the factory started in 1838 while the actual company registration took place in 1839. It should be noted that no official mark registrations can be found; in fact I have so far not been able to find any reference to marks used by Äcker at all.

[2] : Porzellanfabrik C. Auvera (1884 until 1918)

There are various sources that claim Auvera founded his own company around 1880 and later took over the factory owned by Äcker. That story however is absolute nonsense and the registration records show that Auvera was not even a partner of Äcker, he simply purchased the factory from him in 1884 and instantly renamed it.

[3] : Porzellanfabrik C.M. Hutschenreuther A.G. (1918 until 1969)

It is often mentioned that the Hutschenreuther company took over the business, however many people miss a vital point: the Auvera family was closely involved with Hutschenreuther and hence the term 'friendly merger' might me more appropriate. For example both Carl Auvera and his son Hugo became board members of the 'C.M. Hutschenreuther A.G.' and Hugo Auvera continued as shareholder and board member of the 'Porzellanfabrik C. Tielsch & Co. A.G.' in the town of Altwasser (Silesia). This may not seem interesting at first glance, but 'C.M. Hutschenreuther' took over the Silesian enterprise in 1932 with Hugo Auvera being one of the directors that had influenced the deal. But even before that, Hugo Auvera had already influenced the Silesian business in favour of Hutschenreuther; for example the 'C.M. Hutschenreuther' exports under the 'Black Knight' label (owned by Graham & Zenger, New York) that carry the 'Waldenburg Studios' addition were actually made at the Tielsch factory; a business relationship for which Auvera signed responsible.

[4] : Porzellanfabrik Hutschenreuther A.G., Abteilung Arzberg (1969 until 1972)

Following the merger of both 'Hutschenreuther' companies in 1969, work in the former 'C.M. Hutschenreuther' Arzberg factory was slowly cut back as production was evenly distributed to other factories. After the 1972 acquisition of the Kahla assets including the traditional 'Porzellanfabrik Arzberg' brand the Hutschenreuther group closed the former 'C.M. Hutschenreuther' factory, their main interest now being the 'Porzellanfabrik Arzberg' factory and brand previously used by Kahla.
