Opis:
Inspired by the tragic events at Columbine High School, Elephant won both the Palme DOr and Best Director prizes at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. Shot on location in an everyday American high school, with a cast primarily made up of students from the surrounding area, this film is one of Gus Van Sants (controversial director of My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy and Milk ) most powerful and acclaimed to date.;Its a beautiful fall day, and golden leaves skitter ahead of the wind across green lawns. Walking through the park on his way to class, Eli persuades a punk-rock couple to pose for some photographs. Nate finishes football practice and goes to meet his girlfriend Carrie for lunch. John leaves his dads car keys in the school office for his brother to pick up. In the cafeteria, Brittany, Jordan and Nicole gossip and complain about their mothers snooping. Michelle dashes to the library, while Eli snaps some photos of John in the hallway. John walks out onto the lawn, crossing paths with Alex and Eric.;Its an ordinary high school day.;But all that is about to change.
Elephant [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray);Elephant is teasingly slow but fails to deliver, and youll find your concentration begin to drift in this overly self indulgent film. Most of the film comprises of long takes of highschool kids walking down corridors to class. Over and over again. Although the arty style looked good on Blue Ray it felt very `film school with long shots of speeded up `blue sky and the sound was atrocious, even distorting terribly in place.;The dialogue is dire - I dont think there was a written script. Now, this isnt usually a problem for me - indeed, normally I love films made this way (Dead Mans Shoes, Monsters and many more all feel vivid and real because they where made this way and are amongst my favourite films) but in order for it to work you need great actors, and the young teenage actors in this film just didnt have the life experience to draw on or capacity to make the technique work here.;The film failed to engage you emotionally with any of the characters either. In fact, I think this was the biggest are the film failed in. It leaves you with no hint as to the nature of the characters - both good and bad - and failed to explore or develop any of them. This means that, when the massacre comes, you feel nothing.;The shooting, when it did arrive was too little too late. And I was glad to get the film over with. It was very short so I didnt have to wait too long, and felt even shorter due to the way it was shot (it played the same scenes over and over from several different character perspectives). All in all, elephant felt like the climax to a better film. It felt like - okay, now Id like to see the rest of the film please. The lead up to these events...;Elephant is a film that, not so much addresses the problem of highschool massacres as depicts one. But then again, it doesnt really bother to do that either. It was an OK watch. It wasnt painful, but it certainly wasnt great. Not as good as the Director thought anyway.;Verdict: overly self indulgent and lacking in everything except some interesting cinematography - but even this was spoiled by it not being edited down to shorter takes. This film about a high school massacre, sadly, turned out to be a bit of a massacre in its own right. One to watch on TV.
