Opis:
Dziki Zachód - okolice Wielkiego Kanionu, koniec dziewiętnastego wieku. Dzielny i prawy szeryf Sam Mackenna (Gregory Peck) jest jedynym człowiekiem, który zna drogę do miejsca, gdzie ukryto bezcenny transport złota. Mackenna zostaje napadnięty i porwany przez Colorado (Omar Sharif), brutalnego bandytę z Meksyku, i zmuszony do wyprawy przez pustynne bezdroża w poszukiwaniu tego skarbu. Colorado od dawna marzył, by go zabić. Teraz jednak musi zapomnieć o zemście i darować mu życie, jeśli chcę, by Mackenna doprowadził go do złota. Po drodze dołączają do nich różni dziwni osobnicy: dezerterzy, bezwzględni zabójcy, miejscowy kaznodzieja (Raymond Massey) i między innymi wydawca lokalnej gazety (Lee J. Cobb). Eskortuje ich kawaleria pod wodzą sierżanta Tibbsa (Telly Savalas). Cały czas są też obserwowani przez okrutnych Indian, którzy tylko czyhają na dogodną okazję do ataku. W miarę jak zbliżają się do kanionu, w którym ukryto skarb, wszyscy poza szeryfem zapadają na nieuleczalną chorobę - gorączkę złota...
Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif battle to find a legendary cache of gold in this spectacular Wild West adventure. In the Arizona Territory of the 1870s, Marshal Sam Mackenna (Peck) is the only living person who knows the tortuous route to the fabulous Cannon del Oro.;During his journey, Mackenna is captured by Colorado (Sharif), a brutal Mexican bandit who has long sought his death. But if Mackenna is to lead the cutthroat gang to the lost treasure, Colorado must keep him alive. En route, Mackenna and the outlaw band are joined by renegade soldiers, vengeful Indians, cold-blooded killers and gentlemen from town. As they near the golden canyon, all but Mackenna are swept by a sudden fever the naked greed for gold. Mackennas Gold is one of the most exciting Westerns ever made.
Mackennas Gold [DVD] [1969] (DVD);From the rip-roaring opening titles to the polystyrene rock avalanche at the end this has EPIC written all over it. And an epic it is- they cant seem to make films like this nowadays: were all too self aware for that. This is in the grand tradition alongside The Valley of Gwangi, the Sinbad films and Jason and the Argonauts (without the monsters though). Its not so much a Western but an Adventure in every meaning of the word. Its loud, fast paced with a perilous moment almost around every turn. As a result there are some great actors in cameo parts popping off every few minutes after looking like theyre up for a major role. This is OK though as the film has a conspicuous number of bad guys in it and even the hero has a shady past........... Theres a great degree of pedigree attached to this film- not just actors, but the director (J. Lee Thompson), producer and writer (Carl Foreman) all have great things attached to their names. I particularly liked Ted Cassidy though who delivers a silent towering performance and who only speaks right at the death. Its a little dated in places- the effects havent computers to aid them but that doesnt matter: great story, great acting, great pace and above all the landscape plays its part too. Stunning. And the Moral?: that there is greed in everyones heart and that it never pays. Terrific.
