Written in 1956, Landsborough's books deals with the failed attempt to seize Tobruk harbour and destroy all shipping and harbour facilities, in September 1942. The attempt was made by a battalion of Royal Marines, a company of Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and a platoon of Northumberland Fusiliers, which had to be landed by destroyers and MTBs, plus a party of 1st Special Service Regiments (Commandos), which had to reach their objective by infiltrating through enemy lines. Due to bad planning and underestimating of enemy troops (in number and quality - Italian troops were thought to be third quality troops, instead they were the San Marco Regiment) the attempt badly failed without achieving any of its objectives. Severe losses were suffered among the raiding troops (both in killed and prisoners), and also among the ships that had landed the troops. The author wrote a detailed account of this operation on the British side. Its sources were mostly survivors of the operation and some British official documents, but no research was done among German and Italian documents, which could be acceptable when the book was written but not for today's standards of history research. So some accounts appear to be highly exaggerated when compared to Axis sources (e.g. in a case the author claims that at least 80 enemy artillerymen were killed in an attack against a battery, now we know the battery only suffered 8 killed). Also a bit annoying is the constant underestimating of the effort and results obtained by Italian troops (that, nowadays we know, had the higher burden in containing the attack). But the book can be still considered valid for what it is, a detailed collection of first-hand memoirs, which can be useful to the modern researcher to compare them with now available official reports and to enrich the knowledge of these not well known facts. Wydawnictwo Avon.Str.188.Stan książki bardzo dobry.
