- Umberto Giordano is one of the most important members of the Italian school of the ”Verismo” which flourished at the beginning of the XIX th century and involved all art forms.
- The libretto clearly evokes the hard female condition within a society that used to favour men. Marcella is a delicate and feminine character who shows great courage in giving up to a dreamlike love relationship rather than making a compromise.
- The opera is divided into three parts ”Trovata - Amata - Abbandonata: Found, Loved and Abandoned ” and features the classical theme of the prince and the poor.
- The music is refined, full of shadings and echoes that might remind us of Massenet.
- Echoes of La Bohème ( Paris as a location ) and La Traviata ( impossible love story ).
- This is a World Premiere Recording.
- The Martina Franca - Valle D’Itria Festival presented this opera to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first performance (1907, Teatro alla Scala ).
- ”Marcella” is a very rare opera. It had not been performed since1938, because the bombings of Word War II destroyed the materials, but luckily the autograph score was saved and restored.
- The aria ”Dolce notte misteriosa” was composed for the magnificent voice of tenor Tito Schipa.
- Conductor Manlio Benzi is specialised in the repertoire of the late XIXth century. | |
