| This book sets out of trace the far-reaching changes that have affected the faience ware produced in Gien over more than a century and a half. Nearly two hundret colour or black-and- white reproduction have been carefully chosen to illustrate the forms and decorations produced in various styles in the course of the factory's history. The authors have attempted, by using orginal documents, old photograps or anecdotes, and even darker episodes, to set the life of the firm against its local and regional background. The books end with a catologue of printed marks, and, for the first time, the coding system used for impressed marks, to identify biscuit were from 1852 to 1969, a glossary of technical terms, a comparative historical chronology and a bibliography, completing the documentation provided, and making this book an essential tool for collectors and connoisseurs. |
