The word "functional" implies an emphasis on communicative functions rather than language functions in the narrow sense of the terms. While the latter is primarily concerned with the structure of a sentence (which is stable and straightforward), the former is more concerned with the situational and social aspects of language (which are variable and sometimes ambiguous). We want to point out again that our book puts stress on communicative functions, but not necessarily ignoring the importance of structures. Hence, the user of Functional Korean will acquire not only a rare knowledge of the communicative functions in Korean, but also a basic ability to understand the linguistic structures and vocabulary of the language.


This book is designed for those who wish to acquire basic survival skills in Korean. At the end of this language course, we hope that the learner will have attained the minimal functional proficiency in Korean, dealing with common situations such as meeting people, obtaining accommodations and services, getting around, doing shopping, dining out and the like.
Unlike many other existing Korean-language textbooks, Functional Korean is concerned with communicative aspects of language. Most textbooks of Korean have taken in the past a structural view of language, concentrating on the grammatical system. It is certainly true that some of these grammar-oriented methods cannot be dispensed with. Nevertheless, we strongly feel that the structural approach to language needs to be supplemented with some other approach, if language is to be taught as a means of communication.
Functional Korean embodies the results of many years of our research and labor, infused with our belief in communicability. The book pays systematic attention to functional as well as structural aspects of the Korean language. We hope that combining the two approaches will help make this book a more fully communicative teaching material.
