O great photographer has ever impressed his per-sonality on the nation in which he lived morę strongly than Mathew B. Brady. Perhaps this is partly because no other photographer has morę completely absorbed the spirit of his times, so that mid-nineteenth century America and the American Civil War are linked with his name. Mathew B. Brady, who used his camera to record his country^ history as Bancroft did his pen, pro-duced the greatest pictorial essay of our times.
Until recently the bulk of Brady^ photographs was to be found in three main collections; the Brady Collec-tion in the National Archives, the Brady Collection in the Library of Congress, and the restricted Frederick Hill Meserve Collection, deposited in the New York Historical Society. The government-owned collections consist of thousands of wet plates, madę by Brady and his staff on the battlefields of the Civil War. The Me-serve Collection contains superb portraits of Lincoln and celebrities of his time. For years historians had been aware of the existence of a fourth collection, larger in scope than the others, which has been stored for morę than half a century in a ąuaint red brick building at 494 Maryland Avenue, S.W., Washington, D.C., the home of the L. C. Handy Studios.
Levin Handy, BradyJs nephew-by-marriage, had come to work for his famous uncle at the age of twelve. He started in the darkroom, coating negatives in the days when a photographer had to make his own (Iwet plates.!t Within a few years he was allowed to operate Brady!s famous camera and for morę than a ąuarter of a century he continued to make most of the portraits in BradyJs famous Washington gallery at 627 Pennsyl-vania Avenue, N.W.
During that period, as Brady had done in his time, Handy   photographed   presidents,   Cabinet   members.
