Wschód słonca ma tę świetlistą prostotę konstrukcji, która dana jest bardzo niewielu filmom: troje zwykłych bohaterów, odwieczny dramat uczuć, jedność akcji. Bawiąca na wakacjach kobieta usiłuje nakłonić młodego farmera, by zgładził swoją żonę i zamieszkał z nią w mieście. Ten, poczciwy, ale dość słabego charakteru, ulega w końcu i zamierza dokonać zbrodnipodczas przejażdżki łódką. Cofa się wszakoż w decydujacym momencie, żona, pojąwszy, co się miało stać, ucieka w przerażeniu. Bohater odnajduje ją w miescie, stopniowo dochodzi do pojednania. Podczas nocnego powrotu zaskakuje ich na jeziorze burza. Do brzegu dociera tylko on. Rozpacza bez granic. Okazuje się jednak, że żona ocalała, świt zastaje ich pełnych radości, przytulonych do siebie.
Według mnie to najlepsze dzieło W.F.Murnau'a i prawdopodobnie najlepszy niemy film wszechczasów. Wogóle film jest bardzo nowatorski jak na tamte czasy (1927r.), ale nie znam historii filmu, żeby o tym dyskutować, ale to się po prostu czuje, bo oglądając go miałem wrażenie, ze jest to film z połowy lat 30-tych. Nietrudno zauważyć dość wyraźny zarys psychologiczny bohaterów, który aż poraża swoją ekspresją. Należy dodać, że nad filmem unosi się niezapomniany duch prozy Dostojewskiego, tyle, że tutaj nie dochodzi do samego aktu zbrodni, a jedynie do działania w afekcie. Bohater, podobnie jak Raskolnikow w "Zbrodni i karze" długo przymierza się do popełnienia aktu mordu, lecz tym razem w ostatniej chwili rezygnuje z niego. Być może nie widzi inteligibilnych korzyści z niego płynących i jest świadom, że sama idea zbrodni nie pochodzi z jego umysłu. Zastanawiam się czy nie lepiej by było dla filmu jakby ta nikczemna paniusia z miasta została faktycznie uduszona. Dodałoby to temu dziełu dodatkowego tragizmu, ale sprawiło by, ze byłby to chyba najsmutniejszy film wszechczasów. Wtedy zarówno ona jak i on ponieśliby karę, już nie za akt zbrodni - do którego o mały włos nie doszło - lecz za samą myśl o nim. Na szczęście wszystko kończy się umiarkowanym "happy endem", co sprawia, że Murnau nie ocenia tutaj tak surowo swego bohatera jak np. Mizoguchi w "Opowieściach księżycowych" Polecam gorąco!
