This third edition of 'Essentials of
Psychopharmacology' is, like its predecessors, based
upon the premier book in the field, the exhaustive
'Textbook of Psychopharmacology' (now in its 4th
edition). The Essentials format is designed to provide a
thorough update of the evidence base in terms of both
specific medications and psychopharmacological
treatment, critical information for psychiatry
residents, primary care physicians, and other health
care professionals involved in clinical care. A
substantive revision with up-to-the-minute references,
the book features new chapters on medications introduced
since the last edition, expanded coverage of other
recent drugs, and a new chapter on cognitive enhancers,
a topic which has received a great deal of attention in
both the medical literature and popular press as the
U.S. population ages. The book is divided into two
parts, Classes of Pyschiatric Treatments, which is
broken down by drug class (antidepressants,
antipsychotics, et al.) and Psychopharmacological
Treatment, which provides specific treatment
recommendations for the full range of major psychiatric
disorders. Though the latter has been streamlined in
this new edition, coverage of critical issues such as
indications, interactions, side-effects, and other
prescribing factors remains comprehensive, and
clinicians can rely absolutely upon its accuracy,
efficacy, and usefulness. A hands-on reference,
'Essentials of Psychopharmacology' is, hands down, the
best of its class.
