I am an English, thank God, I was not inclined to turn my back on my country's foes until i have seen the whites of their eyes and let them see mine.In July 1914 John Morse, an Englishman, set our from his native shores to travel in Germany, initially on business and subsequently for pleasure. While he was in Kalisz, a Polish town, but at that time in the east of the German Empire, ten miles from the Russian frontier, Germany declared war on Britain, France and Russia and the First World War erupted around him. Unable to return to his homeland, and regarded with suspicion by the numerous German officers and regarded with suspicion by the numerous German officers and soldiers in the vicinity, Morse made his way through the German lines into Russian territory, where he was offered help to make his way back to Britain. Unwilling to run away from the declared enemy of Britain, he joined the Russians who extend the hand of friendship to him, fighting first with a Cossack cavalry regiment and then with a horse artillery battery. He served with the Russian army until 1915, and experienced at first hand the might of the Russian military machine, a force characterised by individual bravery, but pitifully ill-equipped to fight the most modern army on earth. After witnessing brutality and incompetence on both sides, he was captured by the Germans, from whom he escaped before returning home to write this account of his experiences.
