What makes us human and unique among all creatures is our brain. Conciousness, perception, emotion, memory, learning, language and intelligence all originate in, and depend on, the brain. During the 20th century, our understanding of the brain has revealed many of the mechanisms by which the brain creates mind and consciousness. The author relates discoveries to specific examples of brain phenomena such as disease, mental illness, ageing or injury, demonstrating how these alterations cast light on normality and describing some of the therapies enabled by growing knowledge of the brain. The first half of "Creating Mind" provides the reader with a basic understanding of the brain. The remainder of the book examines aspects of brain function that are directly relevant to how it creates mind. "Dowling, a Harvard neurobiologist...explains much that [we] take for granted: how brain cells fire, how synapses work, and the effects of drugs on the brain. He deals briefly with depression and schizophrenia, and with the prinicples of memory, vision, and emotion."
