Metal Archives:
This is the new album from the Belgian group Emeth. I have found all of their releases to be of high quality, and Telesis is of no exception.
Stylistically, they’re a little different here as they have been on their previous efforts. They’ve added some breakdowns and other various –core elements into their music, but this does not make it bad at all. In fact, I believe it diversifies the music, and gives it a new edge.
The first thing you will notice is the production…much better than on their other albums. Everything is loud and clear to the point of even having to turn down the volume a notch or two on your stereo/computer. For the style they’ve shifted to here, I believe this was a good move, because having “Insidious”-like production would not have delivered the punch needed.
The guitar riffs are excellent here, and to point out one or two will not do it justice. There are several breakdowns throughout the riffs, but these are worked to excellent effect (see: Anochi Kofer), and accentuate the rest of the song they are placed in. The drumming is very tight, and there seems to be more variation than before. This is a definite plus, because a constant blasturbation, like Insidious, would not have worked. Highlighting a specific part of his drumming is impossible, as each track is well executed in this area.
The vocals are much more understandable, which is a nice touch, but lyrically, they’ve taken a backward step. Thankfully, I don’t pay too much attention to the lyrics too much, but I did notice it. On their previous efforts, they used very existential lyrics, much like Meshuggah do, and while they still do here, they don’t have quite the same impact. Nevertheless, they’re still decent enough.
The two instrumental tracks at the end seem to act as fillers, personally. One more song, or a better instrumental closer, would’ve worked a little better than the tribal-esque thing they have going.
Still, the 9 normal tracks are good enough. For some fans of Emeth, this may have too many –core influences and they will be turned off. For them, they can enjoy Insidious and Reticulated. I like all 3 albums equally, and Telesis is no better or worse than their previous two. It is a slightly different direction for them, but the album still oozes quality. Emeth are a band to be reckoned with.
