This volume is a close translation of a book published in Polish in 1998 [Banaszak J. (ed.) 1998. Ekologia wysp leśnych.]. The translation has been revised and updated by the authors of individual chapters.

Ecology of Forest Islands is concerned with the biocoenotic role of forest islands in the agricultural landscape. The book has been divided into two parts. Part I presents results of original research carried out by multidisciplinaiy team in the vicinity of the 'Puszcza Zielonka' Landscape Park (W Poland) in the early 1990's. Part II includes more general analyses of the problem of habitat islands. It is composed of several chapters written by members of the team and other Polish specialists in this field. The analyses are based on the results presented in Part I, earlier research conducted in NE Poland, and other available published data.
We hope that this book will not only be useful to researchers and students, but will also help local governments to understand and shape the agricultural landscape
