The penultimate season (1996-97) of this family favorite lessens its intense focus on Dr. Mike (Jane Seymour) and her family to explore peripheral town characters and guest stars. For instance, Dr. Cook (Brandon Douglas) -- the young doctor introduced in Season 4 -- gets more screen time when he takes on a larger role at Dr. Mike's practice in "Having It All," while Jake (Jim Knobeloch) and Preston (Jason Leland Adams) run against each other for mayor in "Right or Wrong." Grace (Jonelle Allen) and Robert E. (Henry G. Sanders) face opposition when they attempt to enroll their son in the town's all-white school in "Separate but Equal." While erstwhile Duke of Hazzard heartthrob John Schneider joins the cast as Sully's friend, Daniel Simon, and even attempts to romance the married Dr. Mike in "Between Friends," Season 5 is perhaps most notable for its parade of guest stars, including: Barbara Mandrell, portraying a renowned singer, in "All That Glitters"; Ray Walston, wonderful as Jake's deadbeat father, in "Remember Me"; Willie Nelson, playing against outlaw type as a famous lawman, in "Legend"; and the great Johnny Cash and his wife, June, reprising their roles as Kid Cole and Sister Ruth in the touching "The Most Fatal Disease." Of course, Dr. Mike still has her family life at home with Sully (Joe Lando), Colleen (Jessica Bowman), Brian (Shawn Toovey), and baby Katie (triplets Alexandria, McKenzie, and Megan Calabrese); and she continues to enlighten the small-minded townspeople about the differences in the world. "Colleen's Paper," for example, shows her treating the sick while finding the time to protect Chinese and Swedish immigrants, hide wanted Native Americans from the Army, fight sexism, and rail against racism. Season 5 even offers an episode about homosexuality, when author Walt Whitman (Donald Moffat) visits the town in "The Body Electric," and a nod to Latino culture on the frontier with the introduction of a new character, Teresa Morales, (Michelle Bonilla) in "Los Americanos." Although sometimes heavy-handed when dealing with issues, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman nevertheless offers up compelling story lines and a main character that inspires. Christina Urban
