The Defeat of the Spanish Armada is one of those rare works of scholarship - a seminal book which captured the popular imagination, becoming the surprise bestseller of the year 1959, when it was first published. Since then it has remained almost continuously in print in hardcover and paperback editions, and now appears in a new format, with Garrett Mattingty's thrilling narrative complete but with a new and wide-ranging collection of 75 illustrations, some in colour, many unfamiliar. This new wealth of pictorial documentation adds another dimension to Mattingly's unsurpassed history of Philip of Spain's quarrel with Tudor England and his despatch of the most formidable invasion fleet the world had ever seen before D-Day 1944.
In putting the naval campaign of 1588 back into the context of the first great international crisis of modern history, Mattingly builds up like the movements of a symphony a broad picture of how events of the time affected men's actions, plans and hopes. He brilliantly connects a series of scenes or episodes, shifting the point of focus from England to the continent and from courts to ships and cities. A feeling of tension mounts to a crescendo throughout Europe as the great drama of the Armada is approached. The battle itself and the aftermath are so vividly and poignantly described that they might be happening in our world today.
'A rare and wonderful book,' wrote the late J. E. Neale, the most eminent of the Tudor historians who were Mattingly's contemporaries. The acclaim was not, however, his alone. A. L. Rowse called it 'a historical masterpiece', and C. V. Wedgwood noted how Mattingly 'makes us feel the moment to moment tough reality of what he describes'. For the historian J. H. Plumb it was simply 'a faultless book, by far the most exciting I have read for many a long time'.
