Der Roman behandelt den Völkermord an den Syrern und Armeniern durch die Türken im Jahr 1915. Erzählt wird aus der Sicht des Aramäers Ammanuel aus dem Dorf Aynwardo im Tur Abdin (Südosttürkei). Die Handlung setzt ein im Jahr 1900. Ammanuel ist ein Kind. Gezeigt wird das friedliche Leben im Dorf Aynwardo. Mit seinem Cousin Natanael heckt Ammanuel so manchen Streich aus. Im Jahr 1915 macht sich Ammanuel auf in eines der Nachbardörfer, um eine Frau für sich zu finden. Zu dieser Zeit beginnt der Genozid. Männer werden ermordet, Frauen verschleppt und vergewaltigt. Auch Kinder bleiben nicht verschont. Lange bleibt es in Aynwardo ruhig. Ammanuel und Natanael sowie ihre Väter holen Christen nach Aynwardo. Dann beginnt auch dort die Schlacht. Aber das Dorf ist uneinnehmbar. Schließlich kommt es zu einem Abkommen, das zusichert, die verbliebenen Christen zu verschonen. Aber auch die letzten Christen sind nicht sicher.
