A light-hearted account of the joys and trials of cycling alone around the coast of Scotland. The journey, on a mountain bike, follows the roads and tracks nearest to the shoreline, from the cycle paths of East Lothian to the trail around the western edge of Knoydart. At some points, near Gairloch and Cape Wrath, the tracks disappear altogether, or are lost, whilst tarmac and heavy lorries pervade the cycling experience on some of the busy roads in the north east of the country. The circuit is completed by travels through the Borders along sections of the Tweed Cycleway and up onto the road to nowhere across the Cheviot hills. The book provides enough practical information to encourage others to visit some of these beautiful and lonely places. In particular this second edition takes account of the growth of cycling in Scotland and provides up-to-date information on the latest Sustrans and local community cycle routes, many of which provide some fine off-road alternatives to parts of the original journey.
