Recorded 2003-04

Hypnagogue jest częścią pełnego wznowienia wydawnict Dutro Jnana. Obecne wydanie obejmuje oba poprzednie, to z 2003 r. (Hypnagogue I) i z 2004 r. (Hypnagogue II) zamieszczone na jednej płycie kompaktowej. Hypnagogue II jest nowo nagraną wersją Hypnagogue I i zawiera aranżację Michaela Masleya na orkiestrę. Płyta mieszka w urokliwym kolorowym digipacku z książeczką zawierającą oryginalną oprawę graficzną Marka Logana i Davida Tibeta - założyciela grupy .

 A pleasant surprise
(5 out of 5 stars)

Hypnagogue [RARE]All I can say is, what a pleasant surprise. I had ordered the standard version of "Hypnagogue"...what I received, was something quite different. the cover (I wish my scanner worked!!) was beautiful, very much more than the photo showed. when I put it into my C.D. player, I noticed, rather than the two cut, full length version I had ordered, I had a nine cut 21 minute E.P. I was a bit confused, but I never complain, especially when I buy something by Current 93, Coil, or Nurse With Wound, as there are so many variants of many of their releases. When I listened to the disc, I was amazed, to say the least. Hypnagogue, which is dedicated to David Tibet's wife (who also does the cover photos), is, without a doubt, the most exceptionally lovely, and personal group of poems, that Mr. Tibet has ever written. The musical background, instead of being performed by a collective group, is solo improvised piano, which relaxes, weaves, and flows with the words, wonderfully. I sometimes have issues with the tonalities of Mr. tibet's voice. They can be coarse, high pitched, and sometimes hard to listen to, for me. I have also had issues with some of his lyrics (I.E.: "The Inmost Light") which sometimes get a bit repetitious, and overly religious in nature (he's a Gnostic Christian, more power to him, but sometimes, to me, it can be a bit too much). This recording, proves him as a very adept and powerful poet. I would say, that even if you AREN'T crazy about poetry over music, this is a wonderful work. Why buy a current 93 record, if I have so many issues with them? I am a collector of recordings by Coil, NWW, ect. C93, being my least favorite of the three, my representation of them, is but a few pieces. This C.D. was a welcome surprise. Not only that, but when I researched this disc, I found that it was a mint condition, very rare original edition. Thanks to the vendor, who didn't know!! I believe that this is included, in it's entirety, on the full-length. In defense of C93, my other favorite works by them (him) are "Thunder Perfect Mind", with three available versions on Amazon, some really inexpensive, "Faust" (maybe the most frightening record ever made!), and "Judas as Black Moth" a comp (though remixed, and sequenced to flow like a whole new piece). The latter, was available quite inexpensively on A., until someone realized that it WAS a limited "new" work...still a definitive, though. I'd recommend "Hypnagogue" , and, who knows, YOU could get a rare one, too! Even if you don't, you'll like it.

Reviews
It has never been more clear that David Tibet lives in a completely idiosyncratic sphere of his own. Perhaps this is true for everyone, but Tibet's world seems particularly out of step with current trends in music, culture and thought. There is something terribly admirable and beguiling about that. Hypnagogue beautifully proves that Current 93 is continuing in its tangential orbit, and exists solely as the outlet for Tibet's poetic musings on Christ, cats, children, dreams, piety, horror, death, dread, decay and apocalypse. You're not going to find any concessions to glitch-pop or retro-electro here. This EP is designed to be a prologue to an upcoming full length, and it consists of nine tracks or "chapters" of a long poem called, appropriately, "Hypnagogue: A Dream Prologue." Like many of Current 93's recent works, it's impossible to rate this album based on the music alone, which is mostly incidental. The main focus is on the poetry, and if the listener is not willing to carefully absorb Tibet's linguistic imagery, the point of the music is lost. The musical accompaniment is minimal: Maja Elliott's impressionistic, Debussy-esque piano is the sole instrument. Her sad, skittering melodies serve to underscore Tibet's rhymeless, alliterative balladry. There are times when the piano brilliantly punctuates a passage, and others where its complex swirl of sound competes with Tibet's intense delivery. David Tibet is an impressive poet, his style remiscent of mystical and abstruse poets like T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats, and even Angus MacLise. The poesy is modern, but certainly not post-modern. There is no irony in Tibet's fatalistic prose, just a classic weaving of idiosyncratic metaphors that may or may not resonate, depending on the listener's willingness to listen and think about the complex symbolism. Like a true classical poet, Tibet even slips into Latin verse here and there. As a bonus, there is a web address on the inside cover where a PDF of the accompanying text can be downloaded, so that one can read along. From the topiary bunny on the cover to the obscure magical glyph at the front of the text, Current 93 and David Tibet defiantly resist any easy categorization. Though I fully expect that many people will find Hypnagogue hopelessly esoteric and even self-indulgent, I feel that it is a beatiful and unique work of art.
