Here's a new one. The movie industry has used an assortment of circumstances to pull together characters for a romantic comedy over time, but has there ever been a hostage situation to set hearts a-fluttering? British film
Comes A Bright Day takes that approach. So you have Sam, played by
Submarine's Craig Roberts, who finds himself brought into the life of Mary, who is played in turn by Imogen Poots. The pair find themselves taken hostage when a jeweller's shop is targeted by armed robbers, and things progress from there.
It's a bit of a muddled film, in truth, that lacks a consistent tone. But it does have things going for it, not least Craig Roberts' performance. He builds well on his aforementioned Submarine work here, and then director Simon Aboud too shows a degree of promise that bodes well for the future. Comes A Bright Day has its problems, though, but it's a diverting movie, that's worth seeking out.
The disc sweetens the deal with some interesting featurettes that take you behind the curtain a little, and a photo gallery is included as well. There's nothing massively radical there, certainly, but it's a tidy package, and a film worth supporting. --Jon Foster
Product Description
Love blossoms in the most unusual circumstances when young bellboy Sam (Craig Roberts, Submarine) and beautiful shop assistant Mary (Imogen Poots, 28 Weeks Later) are kidnapped by brutal armed robbers (Kevin McKidd, Trainspotting; Josef Altin, Eastern Promises) intent on stealing a £1 million brooch. Taken hostage along with belligerent shop owner Charlie (Timothy Spall, The King’s Speech), the young couple find themselves falling for each other on this terrifying ‘first date’. This tense and stylish British thriller proves that sometimes extreme pressure can reveal a hidden gem.
Comes a Bright Day was written and directed by Simon Aboud and produced by Christine Alderson.
