Classical Antiquities is an illustrated cata­logue of the classical holdings of the Stovall Museum of Science and History in the University of Oklahoma. The col­lection, unique in the southwestern United States, includes:

Inscribed materials from ancient Mesopotamia, pre-Islamic south Ara­bia, and third century a.d. Rome Greek ceramics from the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Geometric and Archaic periods, and the Classi­cal and Hellenistic eras Etruscan bronzes and ceramics Ancient Mediterranean terra-cottas Syro-Palestinian and Roman glass Greek, Jewish, African, and Roman coins

Every item in the collection is described in detail, with a transcript and transla­tion of any wording appearing on the item. Most of the pieces are illustrated with one or more photographs.

The Stovall Museum's classical collec­tion was inaugurated just before World War II with private donations and gifts from other museums. Today it is a select but significant holding, and this book is designed to make it better known to scholars, collectors, and museum visi­tors. The preparation of the catalogue led the researchers to new insights into the manners, customs, politics, and reli­gion of the ancient world, and these are shared with the reader in the introduc­tions to the groups and individual de­scriptions. The sum is a wide-ranging tour of the ancient world through in­valuable artifacts that have come down to us.

Items in the collection that are par­ticularly valuable for scholars are those that were excavated at the Athenian Agora in the 1950s. A few of the out­standing ceramic pieces in the collec­tion, all illustrated in these pages, are no. 53, a Mycenaean stirrup jar; no. 73, a Geometric high-rimmed bowl; no. 84, a rare Attic eye cup; no. 85, a beautiful Diosphos vase; and no. 104, an Attic black-glazed stamped amphoriskos. An Etruscan bronze figurine of Apollo (no. 122) is in a class by itself.

Also forming part of the collection are two recently acquired terra-cottas from south Italy (nos. 137 and 138). Several pieces of glassware are par­ticularly noteworthy: no. 167, a Syro-Palestinian toilet bottle; and no. 174, a double-head flask. The coin collec­tion has an exceptional group of well-

preserved early Roman Empire bronzes. A striking example is no. 242, a Nero coin.

With the appearance of this cata­logue, the Stovall collection of antiq­uities is accorded the public attention that it clearly deserves.
