CLASSIC ROCK  Classic Cuts No.6 (CD)

Tracklista:

YES 'Homeworld'

From the album 'The Ladder' (Eagle) No-one at Classic Rock was too bowled over by 'Open Your Eyes', Yes' last studio effort, not even our prog man Nick 'Mine's A Perrier' Shi1ton. This nine minute odd slice of prog heaven, recalling 'Close To The Edge', had us all raising flaggons of meade aloft in unison. Shilton, it should be pointed out, opted for a shandy!

Nadine - 'Deaf, Blind And Dumb'

From the album `Downtown, Saturday' (Glitterhouse) The sublime and evergreen style of Neil Young at his very best can be heard drifting through Nadine's own exemplery five star sound. Here, Nadine frontman Adam Reichmann's heartfelt vocals carry a track of stark and plaintive beauty in a manner that brings to mind the classic days of Young's 'Harvest'.

Hawkwind – 'Motorway City'

From the album 'Levitation' (Castle) In 1980, Hawkwind could still whip up a fair old psychedelic storm (Ginger Baker on drums helped). 'Motorway City' is one such example, with Messrs. Brock, Lloyd-Langton and Bainbridge rocking away. These were the years that Tim Blake was in the band.

Ian Hunter - 'Cleveland Rocks'

From the album 'You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic' (Chrysalis) Part of the EMI Classic Rock series, for which we have supplied sleevenotes. From a 1979 album that saw a return to form for Hunter, and a return of guitarist Mick Ronson. One Barry Manilow would later cover the song 'Ships', but 'Cleveland Rocks' is Hunter at his sarcy best and remains a staple part of his live set to this very day.

Enuff Z'Nuff - 'No Place To Go'

From the album `Paraphernalia' (Spitfire/Eagle) The mere mention of which reduces Phil Wilding to tears. But we hope you won't cry when you hear this gem, which proves that Enuff Z'Nuff have never lost the ability to pen oh-so catchy melodies and wrap them up in their finely tuned psychedelic/ heavy rock package. Up there with that classic debut album we say, and we think you'll agree with us.

Ronnie Lane - 'You're So Rude'

From the album 'Tin Tambourine' (NMC) This live version of the Faces classic is culled from 'Tin & Tambourine, a collection of 16 unreleased and rare tracks from the late Ronnie Lane's post-Faces career. Losing none of the charm of the original, this song is indicative of the tuneful, unpretentious music that Lane delivered throughout the '70s and early '80s, before his career was curtailed by the onset of multiple sclerosis. 'Tin & Tambourine' is also available as part of the 'Plonk' 4 CD boxed set reviewed on page 80.

Spock's Beard  -'Skin'

From the album 'Day For Night' (Inside Out) American progmeisters make their UK debut in October, and on this evidence their pair of live shows will be something very special indeed. Their blend of flashy musicianship and psychedelic flair is something to behold. Fans of It Bites will surely find something here to excite them.

Lukan - 'Sweet Odour'

From the EP 'Loop' (Depth) This up 'n coming British band have recently been out on the road with Thunder on the latter's British tour. Their mindset's not too far away from Mr Morley and chums either; big, traditional riffs and choruses you can hang your hat on. Unpretentious sounds for fans of frill-free music. Can't say fairer than that.

Newman - 'Taboo'

From the album 'One Step Closer' (Escape) Steve Newman is indeed a man of many talents. Besides naming his band after himself, he sings and plays guitar and keyboards on this memorable slice of tuneful hard rock. Its snappy chorus and razor-sharp riff will make 'One Step Closer' your best new friend.

Dirty Deeds  -'Kill The Pain'

From the album 'Real World' (Beast) Rising from the ashes of East London metalheads Chariot, Dirty Deeds thrive on meaty riffs, juggernaut rhythms and, perhaps

their secret weapon, catchy choruses. The inaugural signing of Maiden leader Steve Harris' Beast Records, they're about to inflict album number two, 'Real World', upon an unsuspecting population. God help us all!

The Walkabouts - 'Straight To The Stars'

From the album 'Trail Of Stars' (Glitterhouse)

Darkly compelling stuff from a cult band who have been with us for over ten years now. The Walkabouts hail from Seattle, and although there's some of that city's grit and angst to be found in Carla Torgerson's vocals, they're no grunge act. This track, from the band's forthcoming album is a perfect showcase for their thought-provoking talents.

I.I. Ash 'Skin'

From the album 'Skin' (Delta Loop) A curious Birmingham-based act, J.J. Ash claim to be influenced by artists as diverse as Pink Floyd, David Bowie and Black Sabbath. Well, whatever they've been listening to for all these years, it seems to have worked, and 'Skin' is a slowburner of a track that really grows!

Krokus-  Lionheart

From the album `To Rock Or Not To Be' (Angel Air) This lot cancelled their recent UK tour at the last minute, dismaying certain Classic Rock staffers who waited to hear 'Bedside Radio' and all the rest. 'Lionheart' is taken from an Angel Air double pack that unites its 1994 parent album 'To Rock...' with '90s 'Stampede'. Incidentally, the Swiss rockers now feature ex-Persian Risk singer Carl Sentence.
