Przełączniki serii 3550 to seria mocnych przełączników klasy „Enterprise” pracujących w warstwach drugiej trzeciej i częściowo czwartej. Do głównych zalet przełączników tej serii należy zaliczyć wydajność. Niezwykle szybkie przełączanie w warstwie trzeciej jest osiągane dzięki technologii CEF (Cisco Express Forwarding). Ta metoda przełączania zapewnia rutowanie z pełną prędkością interfejsu, niezależnie od ilości przekazywanych pakietów na sek.. Kolejną zaletą cechującą przełączniki serii 3550 jest możliwość łączenia w stos (is stackable) oznacza to, że urządzenia tej serii połączone „w stos” mogą być widziane i logicznie zarządzane tak jakby były jednym wielo interfejsowym przełącznikiem. Przełączniki serii 3550 posiadają możliwości wdrożenia polityki priorytetyzacji ruchu QOS (Quality of Service), rate-limiting (kolejkowania), czy stosowania ACL (Access Lists). Przełącznik ten posiada 24 porty 10/100 MB oraz 2 gniazda do obsadzenia modułami GBIC. Przełącznik jest wyposarzony w obsługę standardu PoE (zasilanie poprzez sieć ethernet).
