 I never heard of Cipher before hearing "No ordinary man" and "dusk", the first track, didn't made much for me. It's nice, with its Cocteau Twins-ish flow of guitars and some ambient sounds, but nothing too special... Then "the lodger" blew me off, with its inspired and crafty saxophone. The record goes on and “the waiting” adds dynamism with some rhythmic elements and the fretless bass having some preeminence… Oh, I see, this record is about evolution. So when I got to track 4, “a far cry”, I was getting eager to hear more. With a kind of reverse melody in the beginning, it turns into an array of emotions and sensations, reminding me greatly of John Surman’s “Road to St Ives” for the restless saxophone and nostalgic, bluesy atmosphere. It’s a very beautiful track, indeed, pure emotion.
“White cloud, blue sky” is very relaxing, with a great guitar work setting the mood for the saxophone, another wonderful track. Then “desert song” adds yet another element to the flow of the record, the human voice, blending into the sax and electronics, with an Arabian chanting. This is a very good track also, still calm and contemplative. “Canyon” has some bass work as guideline for the electronic and the sax sounds. At this point I wished for less sax, as it’s repeating a bit the same ideas as in previous tracks, but the track works fine. “Bodhidharma” starts with a stronger electronic element, bringing the ambient side of the record to the surface, which works very well after being more in the background in the other tracks. Hypnotic and subtle, this track is very interesting with that gentle guitar so perfectly thrown in the mix. “No ordinary man” announces the end of the travel with the piano nostalgic and slow notes. The flute is just beautiful and this is an adequate track to finish this record… Emotion rises again, and the taste this record leaves is of sweet, calm, warm nostalgia.
