Opis:
Rok 1792. Bagna Romney to pusta i dzika kraina, do której niechętnie zapuszczają się podróżni. Tutejsi mieszkańcy, dumni i niezależni, od pokoleń zajmują się przemytem. Ich wypełnione winem i brandy statki przemykają między okrętami blokady do Francji. Niewielu wynajętych przez rząd śmiałków jest chętnych do poszukiwania kryjówek przemytników. Każdego odstrasza legenda Ducha z Bagien, który nocami krąży po rozlewiskach. Wreszcie znalazł się człowiek, który nie uląkł się zjawy i na zlecenie Korony podjął się wytrzebienia przemytników z bagien Romney. Ktoś jednak uprzedził mieszkańców, że nadciąga groźny i nieustępliwy kapitan Collier (Patrick Allen). Pierwsze rewizje i przesłuchania, choć brutalne, nie przynoszą rezultatów. Collier zaczyna się domyślać, że rozwiązanie zagadki znajdzie tylko na bagnach, w królestwie Ducha. Hammer's 1962 "captain clegg",based on "doctor syn"(the names were changed because of a rights issue,with disney)is a fantastic example of their output from down place at bray.Peter cushing is on fine form in the lead role,as the smuggler,captain clegg, living under an alias doctor blyss,he,as ever gives a fantastic performance.Hammer stalwart Micheal ripper,great as ever,as mr mipps,actually has a supporting role that lasts the duration of the film!usually hammer only gave him cameos.The production value is high,as always from Bernard robinson,location shooting,at nearby braywood for the church,and other locations in bucks,all look authentic.I have to say,the "marsh phantoms"courtesy of les bowie's special fx department are visually stunning,these are Dr.blyss and his cohorts dressed as skeletons on horse-back riding at night,across romney marsh to frighten away locals who may stumble upon the smuggling.Director Peter graham scott,keeps the pace fast moving,and engaging for excitement,also check out,young oliver reed,at the time,a hammer contract artist in a supporting role.All in all,if you love hammer,at their peak,and enjoy some of the other avenues,they explored,you will love this.
