About the Authors:

William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. He has authored 15 titles, and counting revised editions, a total of 33 books on various aspects of these subjects. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients have included computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions. Dr. Stallings holds a PhD from M.l.T. in Computer Science and a B.S. from Notre Dame in electrical engineering. Dr. Stallings is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous technical papers. Richard Van Slyke is Professor of Computer Science at Polytechnic University. From 1983 to 1988 he was Director of New Your State's Center for Advanced Technology in Telecommunications at Polytechnic. He is currently studying the strategic role of information systems in business and economic competitiveness. As a consultant, Dr. Van Slyke worked with five of the largest U.S. banks, AT&T, NYNEX, E.f. Hutton, Metropolitan Life, the Defense Department, Perkin-Elmer, Merck, RCA, WUI, and many other uses and providers of information services. Dr. Van Slyke received a B.S. in Physics from Stanford and Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Berkeley.
