This recent book from Osprey publishing is another in the series of previously published material from softcover now being re-released in hardcover.

This book covers forts and fortresses from ancient times to the present - from ancient China to the underground fortresses of the cold war. The book contains cross-sections, paintings and color photographs, and discusses the evolution of fortresses, from simple earthworks, to castles, to those underground complexes that are meant to survive an attack with nuclear weapons. This is an illustrated book, rather than a picture book with some text, and the extensive text gives a very clear exposition of how forts and fortresses evolved in different parts of the world and how their design was dictated by the evolution of military technology. It discusses fortifications in South America, Africa, India, China and Japan, in addition to the expected coverage of European castles and fortresses. The coverage also extends fortifications in general, such as the Maginot Line, the Great Wall of China and Hadrian's Wall.

This is a five star book that should be appreciated by those interested in history, especially military history. Being richly illustrated and covering forts and fortresses throughout the world it should also be of interest to travelers and vacationers who wish to understand more fully what they are seeing.
