After casting James Spader as unscrupulous shyster Alan Shore for the final season of The Practice, writer-producer David E. Kelley came up with Boston Legal in 2004 to spotlight his newly minted, Emmy-winning TV star. And while the spin-off bears all the same thematic and stylistic trademarks of other Kelley productions, including a fascination with topical, controversial subjects, he chose to soften Shore's hard edges as this first season progressed. Instead of dominating the ensemble, Spaders Shore evolves into the straight man to costar William Shatner. The erstwhile Capt. Kirk is a hoot as the firm's addle-brained, egotistical senior partner Denny Crane, a role that earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor for The Practice's final season. The Spader-Shatner chemistry ranks among TVs all-time great pairings, as evidenced by the duos Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively, for this first season. They get off to a flying start with "Head Cases," which begins with the nervous breakdown of another partner, thus creating an opening at Crane, Poole & Schmidt for Shore and his Practice sidekick, Tara Wilson (Rhona Mitra). "Catch and Release," an unusually strong early episode, introduces Freddie Prinze Jr. as Donny Crane, supposedly Denny's illegitimate son. The season's halfway point sees the arrival of Candice Bergen as the firm's other founding partner -- and Denny's former paramour -- in "Schmidt Happens." But the undisputed high point of Boston Legal's first year is its riveting finale, "Death Be Not Proud." Arguing passionately on behalf of the accused in a Texas death-penalty case, Spader is simply brilliant. Although the inaugural season was marked by unexpected cast changes -- promising supporting player Lake Bell was summarily dismissed when her character failed to click with viewers, and Mitra's part dwindled to practically nothing before she, too, exited the series -- Boston Legal proved itself a worthy addition to Kelleys list of hits.
