This book has some very basic and useful information in it for any aspiring sax player. There are sections on scales, technique, effects, altissimo fingerings, and an interview with Boots, which is worth the price of the book all by itself. Along with all that, there are transcriptions of some well-known songs, including Boots's famous "Yakety Sax." I think if you were to just master the stuff in this small volume, you would have a firm grasp on all the fundamentals you would need to be a very good sax player.
This book is very thin in actual instruction. 20 pages are scales, which could be found in any other book. 12 pages are an interview with Boots Randolph, interesting but not useful. That leaves technique, which takes a total of 14 pages. Not much for a 64-page book! At least it contains a CD. Recommendation: look elsewhere.
Randolph Boots (Homer Louis Randolph III) had a multi-million selling hit single with "Yakety Sax", penned by Boots and his friend James Q. "Spider" Rich. It's that song that many among us remember from the very popular British "Benny Hill" show. Boots was the first musician to play sax with Elvis including "Return To Sender" and "Reconsider Baby". He played on 8 of Elvis' Movie Soundtracks. He was a major player in creating the "Nashville Sound". He played on recordings such as Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman", "Blue Bayou", and "In Dreams", Al Hirt's "Java", REO Speedwagon's "Little Queenie", and Brenda Lee's "Rockin' 'Round The Christmas Tree", "I Want To Be Wanted" and "I'm Sorry".I don't play sax, but I do buy the books for my son who plays tenor sax. I love boogie-woogie, jump blues, electric blues and old time rock 'n' roll. This book is right in that alley. My son has played yakety sax more than any other song in his library of 10 plus sax books. ;-)The included CD gives you techniques, performances and play-alongs for the transcriptions.Transcriptions:Funny How Things Slips AwaySt. Louis BluesBallin' The JackBill Bailey, Won't You Please Come HomeYakety SaxKansas CityIt also has a list of must recommended Rock 'n' Roll sax players to listen to.Yeah baby!
