Bill Grogan's Goat is a high-energy Celtic rock band that takes
traditional Celtic and folk tunes and reinvents them by adding their own
rock and roll fuel to the mix. This collaboration of five seasoned musicians
combines their various musical backgrounds; ranging from symphonic band
music to hardcore punk rock; solo Irish ballad singing to avant-garde jazz.
This diversity makes for a musical mash-up that puts a new spin to Irish
folk music. Taking their unique moniker from a comic American folk song,
The Goat presents this classic twist of old favorites to a new generation
of music fans. They rediscover popular Irish standards such as “The Wild
Rover” and old tunes such as the Irish rebel song, “Come Out Ye Black
and Tans,” as well as the perennial favorite “Dirty Old Town” by Ewan MacColl
and made famous by The Pogues. However, they are not a covers band at
all but a “tribute” to this style of music. The Goat also perform original
songs that are Guinness flavored as well.
Utilizing a rock band format of bass, drums, guitars and traditional
instruments such as Irish bouzouki, tin whistle, mandolin and five-string
banjo, Bill Grogan's Goat offers an exciting alternative to the average rock
band and join the growing legion of Celtic rock bands such as The Pogues
and Flogging Molly. Hailing from Detroit, hometown of Motown, techno and
garage rock, the band definitely stands out in its music scene and offers
up their version of Detroit rock n’ roll. Their self-titled debut album features
13 tracks of reinventions of Irish standards.
