Violin Concerto in D, Op.61 Wolfgang Schneiderhan Berliner Philharmoniker Jochum
Violin Romance No.1 in G major, Op.40
Violin Romance No.2 in F major, Op.50 David Oistrakh Goosens
An absolute classic of a recording of all three concertos, sounding as fresh as if you were there in the live concert. If you can only pick one Beethoven Concertos recording for your library, this has to be the one. Kempff really defined a standard for the 'Emperor' that has rarely been matched, much less surpassed for his considered yet passionate understanding of the work. His performance is finely balanced against the weight and fluidity of the Berlin Phil under Leitner's magic wand. This version of Triple Concerto is a marvel of lyricism and playfulness that sings the joy of composer and musicians. The loving tenderness of the Largo show solo instruments and orchestra in a convincing intimate embrace that wraps around you. Balance and clarity, richness of tone and brightness of colour come across strongly throughout. Beethoven's Violin Concerto starts with a soulful melody that is sensitively handled balancing sadness, yearning and angst. Although acurately played the piece is full of emotion taking one on a magical journey. An almost religious peace pervades the Larghetto. We finish with a full blooded Rondo allegro taking us on our meandering but interest packed journey home to joy. A wonderful interpretation by Schneiderhan, Jochum and the Berlin Phil.
