The violinist Philippe Hirshhorn was born in Latvia in 1946 and died in 1996 in Brussels. He settled in Belgium in 1973, after he won the first prize of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1967 (Gidon Kremer was third the same year). He played in all the major centres of Europe, America and Japan with the most prestigious conductors (Von Karajan, Leitner, Frübeck de Burgos, Lopez-Cobos, Foster). In the recent years, he concentrated on chamber music which he played with partner who were also friends such as Lisa Leonskaya, Martha Arguerich, Mischa Maisky, Brigitte Engerer, David Geringas, etc. The extreme rigour which he devoted to his art hindered the release of disks and so we are fortunate to rediscover today the recordings of three great concertos which he has left us like the trace of three eras of his life.
