In the wake of Star Wars (1977) came many a space opera seeking box-office glory. Battlestar Galactica (1978) started life as a television series, though after the pilot episode swept the ratings in America a shortened version was released in cinemas overseas. Composer Stu Philips's score was issued on LP and recycled through the life of the series, and this album is effectively a remake of that original release, with the composer himself winning strong performances from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. A dark "Prologue" leads to a rousing statement of the memorably heroic main theme. What follows is a complex, rather melancholy action score far grander in conception than the series for which it was written. There is a percussive fury to Phillips's writing, together with a foreboding lyrical quality which inevitably evokes comparisons with John Williams's great score for Star Wars, but also stands proudly in a tradition of fantasy music traceable to Bernard Herrmann's The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958). Stu Phillips also composed the music for producer Glenn A. Larson's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1978), as well as the 1970's Spider-Man TV series, but it is his powerful Battlestar Galactica that remains his most enjoyable and lasting contribution to fantasy television. --Gary S Dalkin
