BAROQUE art and architecture flourished in western Europe between the Renaissance and the age of neo-classicism. Dynamic and emotional, the Baroque style originated in Italy about 1520 and soon adopted special characteristics in France, Germany, Spain, England, and the Netherlands. Leading architects - Bernini, Borromini, Fischer von Erlach, and Wren - produced such outstanding structures as St. Peter's in Rome, Vienna's Karlskirche, St. Paul's in London, and the great palace of Versailles. Among the greatest painters of the period were Caravaggio, Carracci, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Lorrain.Originating in Paris 200 years later, the lighter, more intimate Rococo style was seemingly better suited to tapestry, porcelain, and furniture, but it is well typified in the many elegant churches of southern Germany, as well as in the skillful, charming paintings of Boucher, Fragonard, Watteau and Tiepolo. This is perhaps the best, most concise and reliable introduction to Baroque and Rococo styles that can be found anywhere today.ERICH HUBALA is professor of art history at the University of Wiirzburg, West Germany.'Students, serious art lovers and libraries seeking to enrich their art shelves with fine quality books will find real value in the Universe History of Art series ... written by acknowledged art authorities.'—Publishers Weekly.ContentsIntroduction 5Architecture 13Sculpture 81Painting 100Rococo 166Bibliography 192Index 194
