Opis:

Bullet For A Badman [DVD] (DVD);Audie Murphy continued to make 50s style westerns well into the sixties. Most of these B westerns were very poor fare indeed. I think of films like "Arizona Raiders" and "40 Guns to Apache Pass". Which is a pity, because his past staccato delivery had been much improved by this time. This shows in "Bullet for a Badman", where his acting is definitely better than in the fifties. Apart from "A Time for Dying", in which he only appeared briefly, this has to be his best film. Relegated by Universal to a mere support picture at the drive-ins it is a superior B western in many departments.;The very literate script has Murphy as an impoverished rancher trying to forget his past life, where he lived by the gun. He has married the wife of an old Texas ranger colleague gone bad, played by Darren McGavin, and looks after the son of this union as his own. But of course the lawman turned outlaw returns to try and reclaim his family, after a botched robbery. But the posse with Murphy at their head is in hot pursuit. The posse pursue the outlaw deep into hostile Apache territory. Some of the posse are more interested in the loot from the bank robbery than the reward on the outlaws head. Murphy has to fight both Indians and his own posse to get out alive. We head to an unexpected and powerful finale.;The film has many things to admire, not least the ravishing cinematography. Way better than the average B western, and containing location photography that would put many A westerns to shame. The location filming in beautiful Zion National Park, Utah, undoubtedly helped the splendid outdoor scenes. The film has a very strong supporting cast. Skip Homeier, that excellent villain from "The Gunfighter" and "The Tall T", appears in his archetypal bad guy role, and Alan Hale Jnr of "Casey Jones" fame, appears as another heavy. Unusual for him, as he was usually cast in more affable roles. Bob Steele and Ray Teal, those two old veteran westerners also briefly appear, giving the film a thoroughbred western pedigree. RG Springsteen the prolific director of B westerns and TV shows directs with surprising style. The outdoor scenes of the posse tracking the outlaw are particularly striking.;There are a couple of negative points that should be pointed out, like the appearance of the two female leads who look more like sixties models than frontierswomen. This does take away from the films realism, which is otherwise pretty believable. Also the stunt doubling is very clumsy, especially in Murphys case where it is glaringly obvious. But this was a common fault of B westerns and was not something I was overly concerned about. It is also rather odd that Skip Homeier appears prominently on the DVD cover, and there is no sign of Audie Murphy. The film contains elements of films like "The Law and Jake Wade" and "The Naked Spur", in its use of locations and having two implacable adversaries. The film makes best use of its clearly limited resources, and is a credit to all concerned in its making. A good example of what can be achieved with a limited budget. Recommended. Optimum Classics have yet again made a very good western available for Region 2 viewers.
