I can't believe how underrated this book is. It should be considered a classic, but it isn't even in print anymore.
The thing that puts it above other children's books aimed at the same age range is that most of the stories in it are derived from old English and Celtic folk-tales, with the main character replaced by our hero, Danny Fox. David Thomson has spun these disparate stories into a continuous narrative, which is integrated so that you would hardly notice (a six year old probably wouldn't anyway, but neither would the adult reading it).
The good thing is that as a child, having read and enjoyed these stories without knowing about their origins, if you happen to chance across the original story or another version of the story it lends a whole new depth and meaning to both stories. As I say I can't believe this book isn't published anymore...
PS. If you're a teacher you should buy a copy for your school. It has a humility and intelligence which is rare in a children's book these days (or ever for that matter).
