After an idle youth, Alexandre Dumas went to Paris and spentsomeyears writing. A volume of short stories and some farces werehisonly productions until 1927, when his play Henri III (1829)became asuccess and made him famous. It was as a storytellerrather than aplaywright, however, that Dumas gained enduringsuccess. Perhaps themost broadly popular of French romanticnovelists, Dumas publishedsome 1,200 volumes during his lifetime.These were not all writtenby him, however, but were the works of abody of collaborators knownas "Dumas Co." Some of his bestworks were plagiarized. Forexample, The Three Musketeers (1844)was taken from the Memoirs ofArtagnan by an eighteenth-centurywriter, and The Count of MonteCristo (1845) from Penchet's ADiamond and a Vengeance. At the endof his life, drained of moneyand sapped by his work, Dumas leftParis and went to live at hisson's villa, where he remained untilhis death.
