Angels have had an all-pervasive presence in the collective artistic and religious expressions of the Western world. From the beginning of humanity's recorded encounters with the divine, they have made their appearance as messengers, intermediaries, guides, and protectors. In this sumptuous hook, treasures from the extensive collections of the Vatican in Rome show how, through the ages, artists have represented the invisible, spiritual beings known as angels. This volume illuminates images of angels from Byzantine, Renaissance, Baroque, and modern Western art as well as winged figures from the time of the Assyrians, Etruscans, and Romans.
Illustrated here are ancient artifacts, paintings, sculpture, liturgical vessels, vestments, and tapestries, including many rare and sacred works. Among the artists represented are Gentile da Fabriano, Fra Angelico, (rhirlandaio, Raphael, Veronese, Murillo, Rouault, and f )ali.
The works of art, have been selected by Prof. Arnold Nesselrath, curator of Byzantine, Medieval, and Modern Fainting at the Vatican Museums and Pontifical Galleries and Guest Curator of the exhibition that this hook accompanies, in tandem with Allen Duston, O.P., of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. A team of scholars has provided revealing essays on the Greek and Roman origins of angel imagery, the iconography of angels in the Western artistic tradition, and the theological basis for their artistic representation, as well as illuminating commentaries on the more than one hundred superb color plates, many accompanied by comparative illustrations.
A preface by His Holiness Pope John Paul II introduces this fascinating look at the extraordinary variety of ways in which artists have made visible the spiritual beings known as angels.
Approximately 300 illustrations, including 1 10 plates in full color.
