Descendants of the Vikings, the Normans were one of the most successful warrior groups of the Middle Ages, conquering the French coast and England. The Vikings were remembered by their contemporaries as fierce, pagan raiders who threatened the Christian world. These Scandanavian warriors exploited the most advance sailing ships in order to navigate the seas and rivers of Europe, landing unexpectedly in very shallow waters, and plundering and pillaging the surrounding areas.

Their success is witnessed by the disruption they caused to established kingdoms like that of Alfred in England and Charlemagne in France. In 991, their defeat of the English at Maldon led to the eventual conquest of the whole country, and the Viking Cnut was elected first king of all England.
