"This is Vocalion's ninth volume of reissues from Ambrose's recorded output, which spanned a period of almost 25 years, and focuses on the latter half of the thirties. The tracklist carries the identity of the Rhythm Sisters, who sing on the first two tracks, but not that of the Manhattan Trio, which comprised Clive Erard, and Frank and Jack Trafford, and nor is there a liner note. Three things contributed to Ambrose's pre-eminence; he hired the best musicians and paid them well, and his rhythm section was superb, as was his ability to get the best out of an arrangement. All three factors are on display here, in a varied selection. Needless to say, the remastering is excellent, and has produced a clear crisp sound which packs a punch on the up-tempo numbers. Evelyn Dall features prominently in several of them, but the excellence of the transfers enhances her tendency towards stridency. Those who prefer a softer approach are well catered for also, with Vera Lynn's bell-like tones and Denny Dennis' baritone enhancing the ballads, not forgetting Sam Browne and Jack Cooper. There are several well-known numbers here, but it's rewarding also to be able to hear the less familiar, of which I particularly enjoyed "Until Today" (the only recording by a British dance band). Given the choice, I would happily have forfeited the title track, but overall this is a reissue I would not want to be without, and I predict that it will sell extremely well. "
