To talk today of Alfredo Kraus - and in particular of the recital he held in Tokyo on the 15th of June 1996 at the age of sixty-nine, celebrating forty years of career - inevitably leads us to retrace the principal stages of his artistic life, which was enlightened by the wise administration of his vocal and technical means.
He sang from an early age but did not neglect his studies, and after high school he enrolled in the faculty of Engineering of Las Palmas. His passion for singing was too powerful, however: in 1955 the young Kraus moved to Milan to study with Mercedes Llopart.
Results were extraordinary.
By the Sixties Kraus was a star, especially in Italy and Spain; though in other countries his fame did not match his bravura. With intelligence and keen critical faculties, he had in fact decided to limit his repertoire to a restricted number of roles.
Indeed this choice, together with that of cleverly pacing his appearances, allowed him to keep his voice intact for a very long time.
Kraus was a reserved and aristocratic figure, naturally endowed with graceful acting skills and refined taste, nobility, self-assurance: these are characteristics that, thirty-two years later, we still find in this Tokyo recital of 15 June 1996.
After warming his voice with two classical ”old arias” transcribed by Parisotti, Kraus launches into an anthology of famous pages (some of them operatic, such as the First Act duet from Lucia di Lammermoor) from the French, Spanish and Italian repertoires. Each and every piece is managed with extreme elegance, noble aplomb and ease of emission, qualities that he attained through a formidable technique and the already-mentioned wise career pacing. At the respectable age of sixtynine Kraus sings without any apparent effort, with that aristocratic nonchalance that was one of the most evident and charming aspects of his style, all the more valuable in a day when a diametrically different type of tenor is in vogue.
